Cape Town - South Africa, May 15, 2010

May 10 – May 15: South African border to Cape Town

After 120 days and almost 12,000 km, we arrived in Cape Town. I was somewhat teary eyed from my first glimpse of Table Mountain till the finish line some 50k away. It was all I could do to keep it together as I saw Randi, family and friends at the finish line. A mayoral reception, awards and a formal dinner followed to celebrate our arrival.

What to make of the ride? It will take some time to put it all in properly in perspective. It's been a helluva adventure, major challenge and ultimately, a richly rewarding experience.

Noordoever - Namibia, May 9, 2010

May 1 – May 9: Windhoek to South African border

We’ve arrived at the South African border where we’re resting up before entering our destination country tomorrow.

Namibia has been brilliant – beautiful desert landscapes, quiet roads and friendly faces.

We’ve only one week to go! We reach Cape Town in 6 days and we can almost taste the finish.

Windhoek, Namibia, April 28, 2010

April 24 – April 28 : Maun, Botswana to Windhoek, Namibia

We crossed this week into Namibia and arrived yesterday in Windhoek - its pretty (and hilly!) capital. It's been unseasonably wet - very wet - as we chewed up the long flat kilometers between Botswana and Namibia.

We start the final stage of the ride tomorrow morning. Riding into Windhoek was moving as it's so close to home - can't imagine how emotional I'll be when we reach Cape Town.

Mosi-oa-Tunya, The Smoke that Thunders – aka Victoria Falls. Nothing quite evokes the picture of Africa as these magnificent falls first seen by an awestruck David Livingston in 1855. We stopped at the falls for a 2 day rest stop and then headed for Botswana from where this post originates.

Lusaka, Zambia, April 12, 2010

April 7 – April 11 : Lilongwe Malawi to Lusaka Zambia

I returned to the Tour from Toronto in Lilongwe Malawi last week and was back on my bike the next day. We rode 5 days covering 750km and reached Lusaka, the Zambian capital, yesterday. The route took us along the remote, sparsely populated and rarely visited Great East Road.

Through densely vegetated and hilly terrain – the long distances and hot humid conditions made my reentry to the tour challenging.
